Walker ends up hiring Logan, who has intelligence experience, to investigate Dorian Munz, who was executed for killing Walker's daughter, Ruth. Walker believes-and wants Logan to prove-that Munz lied when he made a claim, shortly before his execution, that implicated Greg Castle, Ruth's defense contractor employer and a friend of Walker's, in the crime. All Logan has to do to earn $10,000 is give Walker info that discredits Munz's claim. Logan begins questioning those involved with the case, uncovering some odd facts and another victim. The appealing Logan, a wise-cracking, marriage-challenged loner trying to practice Buddhist tenets, proves his mettle as both pilot and investigator. Cordell Logan, the Southern California flight instructor and former black-ops specialist, returns in his second adventure. With his flight school continuing to struggle, Logan happily accepts a freelance investigating gig from Vietnam War hero Hub Walker, whose daughter's convicted killer, moments before being executed, claimed that the real killer was a prominent defense contractor. Hub doesn't believe the claim and wants Logan to prove it false. Seems simple enough more a paid vacation to tony La Jolla than real work but soon enough Logan finds himself fighting turbulence on all fronts: nobody with knowledge of the case is talking, and someone seems to want him dead. As in Flat Spin (2012), Freed combines an intriguing mystery with some engaging banter from the Spenser-like hero and several exciting flying scenes. The trick, as the series continues, will be to find believable ways to keep incorporating flying into the action. When Logan is in the air, Freed's series really takes off. Pair this episode with Randy Wayne White's Night Moves (2013), which also boasts some exciting aerial drama.--Ott, Bill Copyright 2010 Booklist
Library Journal Review
Private pilot and Medal of Honor-recipient Hub Walker's daughter was killed by a man who, on his deathbed, names Hub's friend as the real perpetrator. Hub hires Cordell Logan, a fellow pilot and former military assassin, to clear his friend's name. Logan lives to fly, using his ancient Cessna to operate a flying school. Unfortunately, he has just one student, few possessions, and little income. He soon finds himself dealing with homicides and the sabotage of his beloved airplane. His beautiful ex-wife is seeking reconciliation, his 88-year-old landlady and his cat both go missing, and several people are trying to kill him. VERDICT Freed's skills as a reporter, screenwriter, and pilot made his first Logan tale (Flat Spin) a delight, and this one continues that roller-coaster pleasure. Logan is a stubborn, wise-cracking, ordinary guy with some extraordinary skills and a passion for flying. He does have a few problems following the Buddha's precepts on nonviolence, but readers will eagerly look forward to his further attempts to combine flying and detection.-Roland Person, formerly with Southern Illinois Univ.
