Horn Book-Rezension
On his birthday, Bear discovers things he can now do "all by himself" (albeit with a little help), but he's disappointed he can't put fallen leaves back on the tree. Then he figures out an alternative: rake the leaves so partygoers can jump in them. Bear's growing independence will likely resonate with young readers. Amiable watercolor and graphite illustrations enhance the story's gentle humor. (c) Copyright 2018. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
Kirkus-Rezension
Reaching an age of some independence and self-sufficiency is the highlight of this little bear's birthday milestone. Now that Bear is old enough, he can prepare for his party, with some minimal help from Mama and Papa, by getting dressed, picking apples, and making peanut-butter-and-honey sandwiches. But when a sudden gust of wind blows the autumn leaves everywhere right in the midst of his celebration, Bear tries to apply his can-do attitude to putting the leaves back on the trees before realizing the impossibility. Instead, Bear and friends rake all the leaves into a giant pile that's perfect for play and jumping. Watercolor-and-graphite illustrations depict Bear, all eager adorableness, so very pleased with his newly acquired abilities. "This bear did itall by himself!" exclaims a smiling Bear. Capucilli's growing-up theme, familiar with preschoolers, shines through in this latest outing. Kids will easily identify with familiar scenes such as height measurement, the special way to lay out a coat on the floor for easy dressing, and the birthday cake finale. Bear's confident, lovable approach to life will serve little ones well. (Picture book. 3-5) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist-Rezension
As Bear helps Mama and Papa prepare for his birthday party, he reflects on the many things he can now do on his own, more or less. This bear can get dressed all by himself, he announces, though donning his jacket baffles him until Mama teaches him a special method. He can pick apples all by himself while sitting on Papa's shoulders. At the party, as Bear and his friends enjoy games and a picnic, even his ill-fated attempt to put falling leaves back on the trees quickly transitions from disappointment into reflection; redirection; and a happy, shared experience. Best known as the author of the Biscuit series, Capucilli offers a picture-book text that's simple, warm, and well cadenced for reading aloud. Hussey's inviting pencil-and-watercolor illustrations feature amiable dressed-animal characters within active scenes that will interest toddlers and preschoolers. This appealing companion book to Capucilli and Hussey's Not This Bear (2015) will hit the mark for young children, who take pride in their own hard-won steps toward independence.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2017 Booklist
