This photo of Lee Harrell in hobo costume was taken during a sales promotion at the Belk-Lindsey store in Punta Gorda. Family lore tells that Robert Davis, store manager, trailed Mrs. Harrell through the store (with suspicion of shoplifting); it was only as he gently escorted the "bum" to the exit that Mr. Davis realized the shabbily dressed character was his own office-mate, the store's assistant manager.

This photo shows Robert L. Davis (1913-1995), manager of the Belk-Lindsey department store in Punta Gorda. Mr. Davis, a U.S. Army veteran, worked for the Belk company for more than 25 years. He and his family relocated from Sarasota when the Punta Gorda Belk-Lindsey store opened in 1958; he retired from the company when the store closed in 1978.

This photo, taken from a boat on the Peace River, shows an unidentified man on the dock at Peace River Lodge, built in 1884 by Dr. A.T. Holleyman, the developer of Cleveland. The venerable sportsman's resort, which could accommodate forty guests, was also known as the National Hotel, Baxter House, and Beajim's Lodge at various times. Although it survived Hurricane Donna in 1960 (when it was the home of the Harrell family), it was lost to fire in 1965. The photo was taken by a Harrell cousin, Burl Keiser of Indiana, after the Harrells had vacated the property.

This photo shows Ecil Nelson Stout standing by the front porch of Walled Gardens, home of the Harrell family before they moved to Peace River Lodge in Cleveland. Walled Gardens, an estate surrounded with botanical gardens featuring exotic specimen trees, statuary and tiered fountains, all encompassed by a red brick wall, was sited at 310 Booth Street between Olympia and Virginia Avenues in Punta Gorda. The house was originally built c.1920 by William Westberry "Billie" Knight, a partner in the Punta Gorda Fish Company, and his wife Mary Kathleen Smith Knight, the daughter of H.W. "Baker" Smith. Billie Knight died in 1926; in 1935 Mary Smith Knight married Edward W.C. Arnold, who refurbished the home and landscaped the grounds to create the impressive "walled garden." The estate was purchased and demolished for expansion by Charlotte Regional Medical Center in the 1960s.

This photo shows Oden Stout sitting on the front stoop of the newly-finished home he built for himself and his wife, Ecil Nelson Stout, on Safford Street in the Alta Vista subdivision south of Punta Gorda. Mr. Stout later enclosed the carport of the small house and built a detached garage and workshop.
