The construction of Charlotte High School was hindered by the hurricane of 1926, and the venerable three-story brick building was almost lost to Hurricane Charley in August 2004. The oldest high school in Charlotte County was severely damaged and thought to be unsalvageable. A grassroots effort by alumni was successful in averting demolition; the remnants, consisting of little more than a roofless shell, were stabilized and the structure rebuilt behind the original facade. Meanwhile, the graduating classes of 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 were schooled at first in alternating sessions at Port Charlotte High, then in portable buildings on the Charlotte High campus. The building shown here was reopened in the spring of 2009.
