Critique du Publishers Weekly
The 10th outing in Sala's Blessings, Georgia series (after The Way Back to You) is less interested in delivering a fresh romance than in placidly checking in with the vast cast of familiar locals. Ostensibly, the heroine is Cathy Terry, who divorces her criminal husband, takes a $30 million settlement, and runs, ending up in Blessings on a whim. When she sprains an ankle during a morning run, farmer Duke Talbot happens to be passing by and stops to helps her. Duke's movie-star looks and white-knight complex make him a well-suited caretaker for Cathy's wounded heart and protector from the ex who wants her dead. The plot may technically qualify as romantic suspense, but there's virtually no tension, and the repetitive, expositional dialogue and abundant backstories of passing townsfolk drag down the pace. Diehard series fans will appreciate this outing, but the uninitiated should not start here. Agent: Meredith Bernstein, Meredith Bernstein Literary. (Sept.)
Critique de Booklist
Cathy Terry has been running from her abusive ex-husband for a long time when she decides to spend the winter in Blessings, Georgia. When she falls while jogging, she is stunned by the kindness of Duke, Hope, Jack, and many others in the friendly town. Duke becomes very important to her. The gruff man is impressed with the tough woman who helps others at every turn. He learns that her ex threatened her, and, after she confronts the PI he hired to chase her, she learns that she can finally be free of fear. Cathy finds purpose in helping rehab buildings for poor families, and in working on the home she and Duke hope to share. Sala's heroine saves herself, while learning that she can enjoy the support of a new family and friends. Sala keeps her Blessings, Georgia, series fresh with fun appearances of returning characters and by dramatizing realistic, modern issues. Fans of Robyn Carr and Sherryl Woods may also enjoy Sala's Blessings novels.
