A.C. Freeman, Augustus Freeman, Freeman House, Punta Gorda, Historical Society
Descripción:
This undated photo shows a studio portrait of Augustus C. (A.C.) Freeman. Freeman arrived in Punta Gorda in 1889 and quickly became a community leader. Between 1894 and 1899 Freeman served as tax collector, a city councilman, and treasurer for the municipality. In 1900 he became the first elected mayor of the city. He also served as the sheriff of DeSoto County for eight years. His Victorian-style home (the A.C. Freeman House), which was slated for demolition in the 1980s, has been relocated and restored and now serves as a welcome center for visitors to Punta Gorda. It is staffed by volunteers from the Punta Gorda Historical Society.
