Gr 5-8-Ruby Redfort, the 13-year-old code-breaking genius, is part Sherlock Holmes and part Nancy Drew. She faces off against sharks and pirates, scornful adult agents, middle school swim teammates, sea monsters, and claustrophobia. But Hitch, Digby, and Clancy are back to help Ruby survive long enough to find the long-lost treasure that evil Count von Viscount is willing to kill for. Rachael Stirling's narration is spot on; she hits both pace and characterizations perfectly, especially the sardonic and smart Ruby. Like the first in the series (Look into My Eyes, Brilliance, 2014), many of the code-breaking plot elements are best understood after seeing them in print, though the work still makes for wonderful listening. -VERDICT Readers who enjoy snarky heroines, mysteries that don't talk down to middle schoolers, or other "Ruby Redfort" books will love this stellar series.-Chani Craig, Converse Middle School, Palmer, MA © Copyright 2015. In her second adventure, child genius Ruby Redfort has become a full-time spy for the Spectrum and must solve a mystery involving marine animals, coded radio signals, and a legendary shipwreck. While many of the characters read like comic-book heroes and villains, Child's writing is consistently humorous and fast-paced. Includes author's notes on historic spy codes. (c) Copyright 2013. Kirkus Review
Thirteen-year-old secret agent Ruby Redfort (Look Into My Eyes, 2012) barely has a week to breathe before finding herself in the middle of another dastardly evil plan--oh, there are also pirates, a sea monster, a mysterious stranger and a lost treasure, too. This retro spy adventure opens with a series of strange marine disturbances. Coast Guard signals are scrambled, all the fish are gone, and there is a whispering sound coming from the ocean. Plus, one of the divers from Spectrum, the supersecret spy agency where Ruby trains, has washed ashore, dead. To add to the ever-evolving, sometimes belabored plot, the boat that Ruby's parents are on is attacked by pirates, leaving both Sabina and Brant Redfort missing at sea. All of the subplots are ocean-related, but readers (and Ruby) don't know how they are connected until Count von Viscount, the villain from the first volume, shows up briefly--his manifest evil nature enough to tie everything together. Child's cliffhanger chapter endings help the pace tremendously, and the codes (musical and binary) that Ruby deciphers are great fun. But thrilling and edge-of-your-seat adventure? That seems to be the territory of other literary spies, despite a cover that oozes intrigue. A harmless, middle-grade mystery for budding sleuths. The sequel to Ruby Redfort: Look into My Eyes (2012) won't disappoint readers who enjoyed the wit, irony, and creativity of Clarice Bean's favorite girl detective. As the book opens, Spectrum agent Ruby is at dive school in Hawaii, confronting one of her few fears (claustrophobia) and ignoring the sharks around her. Back home in Twinford, you can be sure both these elements will resurface along with pirates who are trying to kill her parents, messages sent over Muzak radio stations, a peculiarly potent sea monster, family legends featuring brave little girls and large gemstones, and the return of evil Count von Viscount. Our favorite characters are all here: the smooth butler Hitch, irascible but devoted housekeeper Mrs. Digby, and Ruby's best friend Clancy Crew. Graphics include musical scores, maps that organize ideas and events, and Morse code. It's as if James Bond met Nancy Drew met Harriet the Spy, and it works most effectively, complete with appendixes that discuss code breaking in music, text, and graphics. Three cheers for a determinedly wholesome mystery series that doesn't talk down to its tween audience.--Carton, Debbie Copyright 2010 Booklist
