This undated photo shows elementary grade students at the Taylor Street schoolhouse in Punta Gorda. Built in 1911, the two-story brick structure occupied the triangular block bordered by Taylor Street, Charlotte Avenue and what is now northbound U.S. 41. Wings containing indoor plumbing were added on the north and south sides around 1917. The students shown here are assembled outside the south wing. The Taylor Street school served grades one through twelve until the high school opened in 1926; it then became an elementary school. The building was lost to fire in 1958.
