School Library Journal Review
Gr 6 Up-Adapted from the author's Secrets of the Universe: Discovering the Universal Laws of Science (Atheneum, 1987; o.p.), these titles each provide a brief introduction to the laws and principles governing a specific area of science. The clean layout and concise coverage include activities for further study, although they would not be appropriate for science-fair projects. The texts are almost identical to the corresponding chapters in the original, but they are supplemented here with clear, two-color line drawings and diagrams. In Liquids, the chapters focus on Archimedes's principle, Pascal's law, Boyle's and Charles's laws, and Bernoulli's principle, although other scientists are covered. Waves covers optics, the laws of electromagnetism, and electric current (Ohm's law and Joule's law). Libraries that already own Secrets of the Universe may want to skip these titles, but many will feel that they merit consideration because of their appealing format and focused subject areas.-Maren Ostergard, Bellevue Regional Library, WA (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review
The five volumes in this series clearly explain complex subjects in well-organized texts. Simple experiments reinforce the explanations, but because the lists of materials and procedures are embedded in the text, readers canÆt easily isolate them. Illustrations aren't always accurate in details. Each volume appends a time line that includes nonscientific items for context, and short biographies of appropriate scientists. Bib., glos., ind.
