Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a library service that allows library users to borrow materials not owned by Charlotte County Libraries & History.

Can't find it in our catalog? If it's a physical item that's at least 12 months old, we may be able to borrow a copy from another Florida library system. Search FLIN SHAREit here to get started.

ILL Policies

Placing a request

First check to see if the item is in our catalog. If we don’t own it, try searching for it in FLIN SHAREit. You can place a request using your library card number and PIN.

Materials available for request

Requests can be made for books, articles, audiobooks, movies, and more. Libraries are often willing to copy relevant pages of their non-circulating items, such as genealogy materials and textbooks.

EBooks, other digital media, and items that are less than one year old are best obtained through a Purchase Request.


This service is free to our patrons, even if we borrow the item from a library in another state. Rarely, a library may charge a fee to borrow specialized research materials. We'll always ask for your authorization if that's the case.

Picking up your interlibrary loan

Interlibrary loan items usually take between 2 and 8 weeks to arrive. You will be notified when the item is available for pickup. Since interlibrary loans don’t belong to our library, we take special care with them. Items are kept behind the circulation desk at your library branch. Ask a circulation staff member to help you check out.

Items are on loan to you with the understanding that they will be handled with care. The ILL label must remain on the item while it is in your possession.

If for any reason your request cannot be filled, we will let you know. If you need to check the status of your request, log in to FLIN SHAREit with your card number and PIN.

Returning your interlibrary loan

Most ILL items now check out for 3 weeks. They must be returned on time.

When you’re done, please return the item to a staff member. ILL items should not be placed in any book drop. They should never be written on, highlighted, or otherwise altered.


Since renewals must be approved by the lending library, ILL items will not be automatically renewed. Patrons may request a renewal 7 days before the due date. Contact the ILL department at or 941.613.3208 to request a renewal, or log in to FLIN SHAREit. We’ll get in touch with the lending library and let you know once the renewal has been approved.

If the item cannot be renewed, patrons are responsible for returning the item on time. Overdue ILL items accrue fines at a rate of $0.25/day. If you're not finished with the item, just let us know, and we can request a new copy from a different library.

Lost or damaged interlibrary loan items

Borrowers are responsible for returning all interlibrary loan items. You will be charged for any lost or damaged materials as determined by the lending library.
