Beschreibung
This undated photo shows William Monson Whitten, former city engineer of South Bend, Indiana, who came to Punta Gorda in 1899. Whitten invested in pineapples, among other enterprises, and built a large two-story home with wraparound porches and a captain's walk across LaVilla Road from Pineapple Center, the railway loading dock created for pineapple shipping. Whitten was instrumental in designing the first bridge across Charlotte Harbor and when construction halted for lack of funds, he paid out of pocket for the bridge to be finished. The bridge was dedicated on July 4, 1921, and Whitten was a passenger in the first car to cross the bridge. The Whitten home, called Cedar Oaks, still exists and is owned by his descendents.

Goldstein House on Marion Avenue
Jpeg-Bilder
Beschreibung
The Goldstein House on Marion Avenue, built in 1886, was constructed in a day. Epfraem "Abe" Goldstein had left his wife, Friederike, and son, Harry, in Savannah, Georgia, while he traveled to the new town of Trabue (now Punta Gorda) to establish a furniture store. A few weeks later, Friederike sent a telegram informing Abe that she and Harry missed him and were on their way to Trabue; they would arrive by train in two days time. The Hotel Punta Gorda was still under construction and there was no housing suitable for families. Abe telegraphed a Bartow sawmill and ordered a carload of lumber to be delivered that afternoon. He then went to the hotel site and persuaded a crew of carpenters to work for him the following day. They started at dawn and had finished by dusk. The house stood until 1968, when it was declared "unsafe." It took three days to demolish.
